THE HUMAN BODY'S BIOLOGICAL CLOCK WINS THE NOBEL PRIZE IN MEDICINE

Monday, November 13th 2017

Jeffrey Hall, Michael Rosbash, and Michael Young have received the award for their discoveries of the mechanisms that control circadian rhythms.

The discovery of the biological clock that regulates the functioning of the human body and other organisms has won the 2017 Nobel Prize in Medicine, as announced by the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Americans Jeffrey Hall, Michael Rosbash, and Michael Young share the award for having unraveled “the molecular mechanisms that control circadian rhythms.”

“Their discoveries explain how plants, animals, and humans adapt their biological rhythm so that it is synchronized with the Earth's revolutions,” highlights the Nobel Assembly in the statement announcing the prize. “Our internal clock [...] regulates critical functions such as behavior, hormone levels, sleep, body temperature, and metabolism.”
